Grinder

 

Classification:  Non-Exempt, Full-Time             Department:  450

Reports to:       Foundry Supervisor                              Division:  Foundry 

 

 

SUMMARY:  Grinds and smoothes surfaces of items, such as sprinkler or Y bodies, prior to finishing operations by performing the following duties. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Examines and feels surface of workplace for defects. 

Starts grinder and moves surface of workplace over to remove scratches, laminated metal, excess material, and burs.  

Operate a stand or pedestal grinder to remove fins, parting lines, gates, risers, rough spots and other excess metals from a variety of castings in accordance with specifications.  The incumbent may be called upon to operate portable grinders. 

The operator works with small to medium size castings.  Work is subject to inspection and check, with instructions given on new work or variations in requirements. 

The work includes grinding to maintain contours, present smooth surfaces, etc…  The operator sorts, stacks and moves castings as directed.  Grinding wheels must be changed and dressed as necessary.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  Requires the ability to read and write, and use direct reading and fixed gages.  Required experience includes, the normal length of time usually required by an average individual to learn the job duties involved which is over 3 months and up to 1 year. 

REASONING ABILITIES:  Requires the use of some judgment to comply with instructions, follow prescribed methods and make minor decisions as to set ups, operations and processes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to walk.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch and talk or hear.  May involve difficult work positions for brief periods.  

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.  Concentrated efforts are required for period of 1 to 15 minutes.  Continuous mental or visual attention with the operation is needed with constant alertness to maintain tolerances and to follow established sequences.  Constant alertness and good safety work habits are required and necessary to prevent bodily injury.

While performing duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions.  

The noise level in the work environment is variable.  The wearing of protective equipment at all times – safety glasses, safety shield, earplugs or muff, safety shoes, apron and gloves.  

Personal Protective Equipment:  The following personal protective equipment is required and must be worn at all times while performing the duties of this job and while in marked designated areas. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must wear approved safety glasses, respirator, safety shield, steel-toed shoes, ear plugs, coveralls, apron, gloves, and a hard hat.

Shakeout

SUMMARY:  Strips castings from chills and flasks.  Cleans out and returns molding equipment to proper storage areas, and prepares Foundry for next shift's work. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Shakeout castings and return empty flasks for molders’ reuse.

Cleans pits and floor. 

Stores packing, rigging, flasks and chills in prescribed manner.

Cleans flasks, places molds in proper position for pouring. 

Places castings and scrap on workamatic lepper or cart. 

Unloads and stores materials as required. Knocks out old brick from ladles when required.

Maintains tools, equipment and work area in a neat and orderly condition.
